IDC College at the NEC: Celebrating Creativity, Sustainability, and Young Talent

Last week, the NEC Birmingham buzzed with colour, craft, and creativity as the Creative Craft, Sewing for Pleasure, and Fashion & Embroidery Show brought together makers, designers, educators, and enthusiasts from across the UK. IDC College together with ICHF Events, was proud to be part of this vibrant celebration of textile arts and fashion innovation — and what a weekend it was.

From sustainable high fashion to exuberant student showcases, Friday’s catwalks shone a spotlight on the next generation of designers who are already shaping the future of the industry.

🖤 Schools Fashion Icon Competition: Black & White Sustainable High Fashion

One of the standout moments of the show was the Schools Fashion Icon Competition, where young designers were challenged to create black and white sustainable high-fashion looks. The brief encouraged students to think deeply about environmental responsibility while pushing their creativity to new heights.

The results were nothing short of inspiring.

  • Garments crafted from repurposed textiles, offcuts, and reclaimed materials

  • Sculptural silhouettes that balanced drama with wearability

  • Clever textile manipulation and embellishment techniques

  • Strong conceptual storytelling rooted in sustainability

Seeing these pieces come to life on the catwalk was a powerful reminder that sustainability isn’t a limitation — it’s a catalyst for innovation. The students’ confidence, craftsmanship, and commitment to ethical design made this competition a highlight of the entire show.

🎨 Young Designers: Crazy Coats Fashion Show

Friday also featured the wonderfully imaginative Young Designers Crazy Coats Fashion Show, a joyful celebration of individuality, colour, and creative risk-taking.

The runway came alive with:

  • Oversized silhouettes bursting with personality

  • Patchwork, appliqué, and expressive surface decoration

  • Playful textures and unexpected material combinations

  • Designs that embraced storytelling, humour, and bold self-expression

This showcase captured the heart of what fashion education is all about — giving young people the freedom to explore, experiment, and discover their creative voice. The energy backstage and on the catwalk was electric, and the audience loved every moment.

A Celebration of Craft and Community

Beyond the catwalks, the NEC was filled with workshops, demonstrations, artisan stalls, and hands-on experiences that highlighted the breadth of the UK’s creative craft community. For IDC College, it was a chance to connect with fellow educators, makers, and future students, and to celebrate the skills that underpin our Fashion & Textiles programmes.

Events like this remind us why creativity matters. They bring people together, spark new ideas, and champion the next generation of designers who will shape the future of fashion — sustainably, thoughtfully, and boldly.

✂️ Workshops with Ruth Parkinson-Johns and Tony The Manbroiderer

Alongside the fashion shows, IDC College was thrilled to present hands-on creative experiences led by two of our own:

Ruth Parkinson-Johns — Textile Artist

Ruth’s workshops and make-and-take sessions were a huge success, drawing in visitors eager to explore her distinctive approach to textile art. Her demonstrations showcased:

  • Beautifully layered mixed-media techniques

  • Sustainable textile practices

  • Approachable, inspiring methods that encouraged everyone — from beginners to seasoned makers — to get involved

Her table was constantly buzzing with creativity, conversation, and delighted participants proudly taking home their handmade pieces.

Tony The Manbroiderer — Hand Embroidery Specialist

Tony’s hand embroidery workshops were equally popular, offering visitors the chance to slow down, stitch mindfully, and discover the expressive possibilities of needle and thread. Participants enjoyed:

  • Learning contemporary embroidery techniques

  • Experimenting with texture, colour, and motif

  • Creating small, personal pieces to take away

  • Experiencing the joy of handcraft in a welcoming, supportive environment

Both workshops highlighted the heart of IDC College: skilled artistry, inclusive teaching, and a passion for sharing craft with the wider community.
