Hand Embroidery: Monthly Stitch Workshops

Beginners Embroidery
Join us for relaxing and inspiring embroidery workshops designed especially for beginners!
Whether you’ve never picked up a needle or want to refresh your stitching skills, this hands-on session will introduce you to essential techniques, beautiful designs, and the mindful joy of embroidery.
You’ll learn foundational stitches, experiment with different fabrics and threads, and create a small sampler to take home. With expert guidance and a friendly atmosphere, you’ll build confidence in your stitching while exploring the creative possibilities of embroidery.
All materials are provided—just bring your curiosity and creativity!

Creative Textiles
Autumn Glow
Create beautiful textured and coloured fabrics, inspired by the hues of Autumn with rust and tea dyeing techniques.
Work on these further with free-motion embroidery and a few of Ruth's signature techniques to create Autumn inspired Textile Art.
Will include block printing , along with many other experimental techniques with Ruth
Winters Walk
Be inspired by the ethereal qualities of a Winters walk to create a magical piece of textile Art.
We begin by layering up several washes of fabric paint to create a lively background to work on.
A flourish of machine and hand embroidery will create further texture and pattern.
Finish off with a splash of beads, buttons, covered washers and metal shims.

Tailoring For Beginners
Learn all the basic skills needed to create a fully tailored garment; a shirt, waistcoat or trousers.
Techniques that will be covered during the course will be:

Intermediate Tailoring
Learn how to construct a fully tailored jacket.
You need to have a good knowledge of tailored finishes, if you have not already covered our Beginners course.
This course is specifically designed for individuals passionate about crafting a bespoke jacket.
Using block patterns, you will learn to cut and make a jacket from start to finish.
Whether you are an aspiring tailor or looking to sharpen your skills, this course will equip you with the expertise to create beautifully tailored jacket.
Techniques that will be covered during the course will be:

Cut Jacket from a block

Make various parts of a jacket with precision, resulting in a high quality finished garment.

Set sleeves correctly, to achieve perfect shoulder alignment and a clean professional finish.

Understand the jacket structure including interlining and canvasing, to create durable and well-shaped jacket.

Install linings smoothly.

Construct collars.

Attach buttons and hand-make buttonholes .

Press and finish jackets to a professional standard, ensuring a crisp and tailored appearance.

Beginners Dressmaking
Clothes Making from a Pattern
Do you long to make your own clothes but find it difficult to follow a pattern?
These sessions will give you the skills to make your own unique garment from start to finish.
You will select your own pattern and fabric and learn step by step from pattern cutting and making a toile through to the importance of hand finishing.
You will be able to learn about different materials, design and patterns.
You will learn:

Take accurate measurements

Make alterations (if required)

Pin & cut the fabric

Add darts, pleats, zip and buttons

Accessorise for individuality (if time)

Dressmaking & Alterations
Are you suffering from the “terrible too’s”? Clothes that are too tight, too loose, too long or too short.
Would you like to learn and build the confidence to master creative solutions to fixing what ails your clothing? Then this course could be for you.
The dressmaking & alterations classes are designed to be a gentle learning approach for learners who would like to re-discover sewing skills, those who are complete beginners, those who have not sewn since school days or confident sewers who would like to try something new.
New skills, confidence and varied techniques are all taught on this course, allowing learners to create garments, repairs, and other projects.
All sewing machines are provided , with basic haberdashery,

Get to know your Overlocker
One Day Workshop
Do you have a lovely overlocker that you bought at a craft show and it's still in the box?
Let me show you how to unlock the potential of your machine.
Together, we can take the stress and the worry out of using your machine and increase your confidence with it.
In this class you’ll have the opportunity to experiment and create samples on calico of all the stitches your machine may cover.
With your overlocker, you will be able to cover the threading of the machines and changing the tensions, as to what you are sewing or neaten a garment.

Samples sheets will help you remember it all when you get back home.

We are honoured to welcome internationally renowned patchwork and quilting artist Jennie Rayment to IDC College for this exclusive one-day workshop.
Create your own original landscape using textural techniques of scrunching, tucking, folding, inserting and pleating for a dynamically 3D unique creation.
Creative play for all - no artistic ability required, just have fun!
